telecommunication

Technology transfer effects can be important in upgrading the technical competence of an industry, giving it an advantage over international competitors. Similarly, from a host country perspective, technology transfer enables the country to acquire technological expertise otherwise unavailable domestically, as a means of establishing new industries.

More generally, new technologies may be developed which are applicable, in modified forms, to a wide range of industries. For example, information technology and computer-aided manufacturing systems. In the UK, the DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY has established Regional Technology Centres to disseminate information on new technology and assist in its application at local industry level, while the DTI's Overseas Technical Information Service provides details of developments elsewhere which may have reference and application in the UK. See INDUSTRIAL POLICY.
