of gold chip shares fell sharply as operators ran for cover and the drop in Paris was in line with other European markets which mostly lost ground.
France's CAC 40 Index
ended the day 1.99% lower at 4,259 points, while the German DAX 30 dropped 2.45% to 9,581.9 points.
London's benchmark FTSE 100 index slipped 0.28 percent to 6,838.06 points,Frankfurt's DAX 30 slid 0.69 percent to 10,847.73 points and the CAC 40 index
in Paris lost 0.65 percent to 4,720.93 compared with Monday's close.

The overall French stock market was showing a fall of 1.85 percent on the CAC 40 index
. At RBC Capital Markets, analysts commented that the effect of the decision by the Commission was "negative" and amounted to "a high threat to profits" if it took effect.
