Usually refers to indices such as the Wilshire 5000 that track the performance of 5,000 securities, rather than the more narrow measures such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500.

Broad Market

An index that consists of many stocks or stocks in many different industries. Broad market indices are not terribly useful in gauging the performance of individual industries they help give an indication of movements in the broader economy. An example of a broad market is the Wilshire 5000. See also: Narrow market.
