Athens Exchange

A major securities exchange in Greece. It was established as the Athens Stock Exchange in 1876. In 2002, it became the Athens Exchange in a merger with the Athens Derivatives Exchange. It trades stocks, bonds and derivatives. More than 300 publicly traded companies are listed on the Athens Exchange.

The parent company and its fully owned subsidiaries, ATHEXClear and ATHEX CSD, operate the organized cash and derivatives markets, carry out trade clearing, settlement and registration of securities, provide comprehensive IT solutions to the Greek capital market, and promote the development of capital markets culture in Greece.
But in mid-afternoon trading on Wednesday the ATHEX index was down 1.25 percent.
The ATHEX index was up 3.56 percent in midday trading at 666.15 points, after having lost 19.35 percent of its value since resuming business at the start of the week.
Greece's Athex share index was down only 0.6 percent, a mild move by the volatile standards of the index, although one which took its drop since Friday to more than 10 percent.
Greece's benchmark Athex General Composite (ATG) index tumbled 5.2 percent, underperforming a 0.7 percent fall on the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index, which was on track for its biggest weekly fall since December.
During early trading on Friday the Athex Large Cap Index was down 5.1% and Eurobank and Piraeus were down 11.9% and 14.8% respectively.
THE Bank of Cyprus (BoC) said on Thursday it was preparing to return to the Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) and the Athens Exchange (ATHEX) next month.
