The mean duration for recovery from leukopenia with G-CSF treatment in neonatal sepsis was less than 2 days and had no significant relationship with pre-GCSF absolute neutrophil count. Approximately half of hospitalized patients with neonatal sepsis and leukopenia may have neutropenia.
The present study showed 63.3%, 74.2%, 67.8% and 70.2% of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value respectively for absolute neutrophil count. The sensitivity of present study is comparable to Buch et al, [9] Zaki et al, [16] Basu et al [13] while negative predictive value correlates with Buch et al [9], Zaki et al.
Having haematological malignancy or non-albicans candida species, being in shock, having an absolute neutrophil count of less than 500, and not receiving timely antifungal agents were significantly associated with higher risk of mortality.
An absolute neutrophil count >500/[mm.sup.3] was attained on day +9 and an unsupported platelet count >20000/[mm.sup.3] was achieved on day +12.
Pain projecting to the lateral side of both feet developed on day 12 of chemotherapy, when the patient's absolute neutrophil count had fallen below 100/[micro]L.
In addition to blood culture, other tests that are used for the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis including estimations of the white blood count (WBC), absolute neutrophil count (ANC), micro-ESR and the immature/total neutrophil (I/T) ratio do not have a high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing neonatal sepsis.
The diagnosis of ELANE-related neutropenia relies primarily on serial measurements of the absolute neutrophil count (ANC) and clinical findings; in this case which were pharyngitis, aphthous ulcers and a mean ANC count of 0.128 x 109/L during the neutropenic episodes.
Of the 89 patients in whom absolute neutrophil counts were determined during the course of the study, 29 of 46 (63%) ganciclovir-treated patients had absolute neutrophil count below 1,000 mm2 during treatment versus 9 of 43 (21%) controls.
Table 3 EVALUATION OF INNATE IMMUNITY Neutrophil function * Absolute neutrophil count (multiple times) * Neutrophil morphology * Evaluation of [beta]-integrins (CD11, CD18) * Evaluation of neutrophil oxidative burst Complement testing * Total hemolytic complement activity (CH50) * Specific component testing - Immunoassay for specific components - Functional testing for specific components Natural killer (NK) cell testing * NK cell enumeration (flow cytometry) * In vitro functional cytotoxicity assay To attack, cytotoxic T cells need to recognize a specific antigen, whereas natural killer or NK cells rely on an alternative recognition system.
CRP, Total leucocyte count, Absolute neutrophil count, Band cell count.
On the 11th day, he is transported to the pediatric ICU, where the following abnormalities are noted: metabolic acidosis with compensatory tachypnea; hyponatremia; increased creatine levels, total bilirubin levels, and lactic dehydrogenase levels; decreased albumin levels; high triglyceride levels; and neutropenia with an absolute neutrophil count of 0.
