The sale of an option in an opening transaction. The option writer incurs a potential obligation to buy (if a put is written) or to sell (if a call is written) an asset at a particular price.

writing
The act of selling an option contract on the primary market. The writer is the seller of the contract; he/she receives money in exchange for incurring the obligation to buy (in the case of a put) or sell (in the case of a call) the underlying should the option buyer exercise the option.
