An evaluation by a rating agency of the expected financial performance or inherent risk of common stocks.

stock rating

The grading of a stock, generally with respect to its expected price performance or safety. A number of publications, such as Value Line, publish stock ratings regularly. Of the major ratings firms only Standard & Poor's rates stocks. Compare bond rating.
