standard practices of the trade(s)

The way in which construction work is normally done by the average professional in the field in that general locale. Most construction contracts include a clause holding the contractor and subcontractors to the standard practices of the trades. Unfortunately, most property owners don't know what that means until it is too late. The better practice is to have a detailed set of specifications and to delete the standard practices clause. For example, standard practices may indicate the use of plastic electrical outlet boxes, but a property owner might prefer to pay the additional $1 or $2 each to have metal ones.
