Slavery The practice in which one person owns another person, or at least that person's labor. In either case, the owner does not compensate the slave for his/her work. Slavery is one of the world's oldest institutions. In the modern world, it is considered one of the most egregious human rights violations. It is illegal in nearly every country, but still exists. In the present, it is strongly associated with sexual trafficking and forced domestic servants. Want to thank TFD for its existence? As Rob Burroughs (2006: 7) has noted, one of the implications of this reading was that "though the slaveries might have suggested to a minority the fundamental ills of colonialism per se, to a majority of Britons they represented the wrongdoings of others. From this launching point, he goes on to address a broad range of topics, including but not limited to: the Israeli-American relationship, the political legacy of Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser, the intellectual contribution of such figures as Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud to European culture, comparative slaveries and terrorism, connections between Kenyan and Palestinian uprisings against colonialism, the role of Islam in world affairs, and Sudan as a bridge between multiple Africas. Apparently unaware of the irony of his own words (and the tragic history belied by them), he writes that Prospero is representative of England's "colonizing, especially her will to raise savage peoples from superstition and blood-sacrifice, taboos and witchcraft and the attendant fears and slaveries, to a more enlightened existence" (255; emphases mine). |
