Shimming

Shimming
The act or practice of a broker or dealer stealing a few cents (or the equivalent) from a client while conducting a trade. Shimming results in a small gain for the broker or dealer, but, with volume, may add up to a significant amount. Shimming is illegal in most jurisdictions.
