A subdivision of the Finnish markka. One penni was worth 1/100 of one markka. The penni became obsolete in 2002 with the introduction of the euro in Finland. See also: Cent.

It is not known who sent the envelope - it may have been Mr Furuhjelund's wife or another relative relaying family news - but whoever did underestimated the cost of the postage and thought the 40 pennia rose on pale rose would be sufficient.
