Stockholder of Record The person or company whose name is listed on a stock certificate. The stockholder of record is the legally recognized owner of the share in the publicly-traded company represented on the stock certificate. He/she/it is recognized as the stockholder of record as of the record date, that is, the date the share was bought.
owner of record The person recorded on public real estate records as the owner of real property. The term is sometimes defined to mean the person reflected on the tax assessor's rolls. The exact definition is important when dealing with statutes that require notice to the owner of record of real property. An example is a tax sale statute with such a notice provision. If notice is given to the wrong person, the tax sale may be set aside even if the statutory time period for objection has passed.Want to thank TFD for its existence?
