The total shares sold short by NYSE members divided by total short sales, which is used to analyze market expectations and bullish or bearish trends.
member short sale ratio
A ratio comparing shares sold short by New York Stock Exchange members with total short sales. Because exchange members are thought to be knowledgeable about market conditions and trends, a high member short sale ratio is considered bearish and a low member short sale ratio is considered bullish.
Member Short Sale Ratio
In technical analysis, a ratio of short sales made by members of the New York Stock Exchange to the total short sales on a given trading day. Members of the NYSE are thought to be especially knowledgeable about the direction of the market and investors often sell short when they are feeling bearish. Thus, a high member short sale ratio is considered a bearish signal, while a low ratio can be thought bullish.
