Market Index
The average value of a certain number of securities that are traded on an exchange. A market index usually tracks securities from multiple exchanges, and often tracks securities of a certain type. A market index may track blue chip stocks or small cap stocks, stocks in different sectors, or any number of other combinations. Most market indices are weighted, meaning that some securities affect an index more than others. It is also called a stock index, securities index, or simply an index.
