Managing Director 1. The person responsible for the management of a business unit, as opposed to the company as a whole. For example, an oil company may have one managing director for its upstream operations and another managing director for its downstream operations, both of whom are responsible to the chief executive officer. 2. A member of a company's board of directors who also has management responsibility within the company. 3. A primarily British and Commonwealth term for chief executive officer.
