Hedge What Does Hedge Mean? An investment that is used in an attempt to reduce the risk of adverse price movements in an asset. Normally, a hedge consists of taking an offsetting position in a related security, such as a futures contract. Investopedia explains Hedge An example of a hedge would be if an investor owned a stock and then sold a futures contract that allows him or her to sell that stock at a set price on a future date regardless of what the market price of the stock is on that future date.
