Ex Officio

Describing a member of an organization who serves in his/her position because he/she already has another post. For example, the Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma serves ex officio as a member of the Oklahoma Native American Cultural and Education Authority. Serving ex officio does not mean one has more or fewer powers than other members (this depends upon the organization's bylaws). Rather, it simply means that the holder of the stated post has the right to sit in that organization.
