Escudo
The name of several current and former currencies. The word derives from the Portuguese word for shield. The Portuguese escudo was the currency of Portugal until the introduction of the euro in 1999. Most other escudos circulated in former Portuguese colonies. The only current currency with the name is the Cape Verdean escudo.
