discount storea RETAILER which sells a relatively limited range of products at low, ‘discounted’ prices (that is, prices substantially below manufacturers' RECOMMENDED RETAIL PRICES and the prices charged by other types of retailer) on a SELF SERVICE basis.
Discount stores may be under single-shop ownership or run as a multiple CHAIN STORE business. In the latter case the bigger chains are usually able to obtain substantial price concessions by BULK BUYING direct from manufacturers. See DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL, CATEGORY DISCOUNTER, WAREHOUSE CLUB.
