Copayment. If you have a managed-care health insurance plan, your copayment is the fixed amount you pay -- often $10 to $25 -- for each in-network doctor's office visit or approved medical treatment In some plans, the copayment to see a specialist to whom you're referred is higher than the copayment to visit your primary care physician. Some plans may not require copayments for annual physicals and certain diagnostic tests. If you see an out-of-network provider, you are likely to be responsible for a percentage of the approved charge, called coinsurance, plus any amount above the approved charge. Before January 2006 and the implementation of Medicare Part D, dual-eligible assisted living residents (those who receive Medicaid and Medicare benefits) were exempted from remitting co-payments for their prescription drugs. Within three weeks, 35 states had decided to pay for drugs or inappropriately high co-payments for low-income people who were having trouble getting the drugs they needed through Medicare as the program was launched. Kaiser Permanente, the largest provider of such products in the state, said Los Angeles County Senior Advantage members will see co-payments for doctor visits drop to $10 from $20, while monthly Medicare Part B payments will shed $15. |
