Automated teller machine (ATM)
Computer-controlled terminal located on the premises of financial institutions or elsewhere, though which customers may make deposits, withdrawals or other transactions as they would through a bank teller. Other terms sometimes used to describe such terminals are customer-bank communications terminal (CBCT) and remote service unit (RSU). Groups of banks sometimes share ATMs. Sometimes called Automated Banking Machines.

Much appreciated is Joe Williams's excellent account of the fiscal-equity juggernaut that has rolled through New York State ("The Legal Cash Machine," Features, Summer 2005).
More than 1,300 account-holders have been mugged at an automatic cash machine or on the way home from a bank in that period, police say.
One even revealed a year's worth of transactions and account numbers from a cash machine in Illinois.
