Capital investment See: Capital expenditure. Capital investment The money an investor or businessperson uses to buy or improve a capital asset. A capital investment is often necessary for a company to begin or expand its operations, as it involves the purchase of the very tools it needs to produce the products it sells. A company or industry that requires a great deal of capital investment is said to be capital intensive; examples include oil, telecommunications, and other industries that require significant infrastructure. In accounting, one usually spreads the cost of the capital investment over the useful life of the capital asset. It is also called a capital expenditure. How to thank TFD for its existence?
