To give a contract to a person or company, especially after competitive bidding from multiple persons or companies. That is, a company awards a contract when it decides to do business with somebody.

The awardees this year include Ashok Pawar, a powerful Dalit voice in Marathi literature; Teresa Rehman for her ground-breaking reportage from the strife-torn areas of the North-east; Tejal Shah, for challenging accepted boundaries of gender and sexuality in art; Trivandrum-based theatre director Jyothish MG for incendiary issue-based theatre and journalist/environmentalist Bahar Dutt for her quiet work with the Kalbelia community of Rajasthan.
The scholarships help develop leadership and set up awardees to potentially influence social and economic development in their own countries and in our region.
The 2009 awardees continue in the tradition of bold activism for an ecologically just and sustainable future.
