Answering Service A company that takes phone messages outside business hours. If an office hires an answering service, one who calls that office after hours is automatically forwarded to the answering service. The answering service can take a message, forward to caller to another number, or take whatever action the office/client has requested. This service gives the caller someone "real" on the other end and, ideally, helps ensure prompt attention once the office re-opens. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
