Nasser Zawia, an associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, and his colleagues found increased expression of amyloid precursor protein (APP) and its product, [beta]-amyloid (which is a hallmark of Alzheimer disease), in aging rats that were exposed to lead shortly after birth.
Amyloid precursor protein (APP) usually helps repair damaged nerve cells.
