street hierarchy system

A local government system of classifying streets in order to determine widths, traffic control devices, building setback lines, and other factors.The most common classifications are

• Principal thoroughfare, usually more than 5 miles long and connecting freeways and other major roads, with daily traffic counts in excess of 30,000 vehicles

• Thoroughfare, usually more than 3 miles long and connecting freeways and other major roads, with daily traffic counts in excess of 20,000 vehicles

• Collector, usually 1 to 2 miles long, connecting thoroughfares and local streets, with daily traffic counts in excess of 5,000 vehicles

• Local, usually less than 1 mile long, servicing neighborhoods and accommodating on-street parking and pedestrian traffic, with low traffic counts
