Secretary of State

The head of the U.S. federal government department charged with conducting foreign relations. The secretary is responsible for advising the president on foreign policy, assisting American businesses abroad, and overseeing U.S. embassies. He or she is appointed by the president of the United States and confirmed by the Senate.
