Job Analysis

In human resources, determination of the duties of a job, the nature of performance evaluation, the costs associated with hiring someone and so forth. Job analysis helps establish whether or not hiring someone is cost effective.

a process of research to identify the tasks comprising a particular JOB and to determine whether they could be organized in a more productive or satisfying way. It is preferable not to analyse individual jobs in isolation but to examine the workflow in its entirety, since tasks could potentially be usefully shifted from one person or job to another. Job analysis can be carried out by simple observation of the workflow or by more scientific scrutiny (see WORK STUDY), and can make use of interviews with job holders. It can form the first step in compiling a list of job characteristics (job specification) for the RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION process or for investigating whether a different JOB DESIGN is feasible.
