The information content of a page is defined by a triplet [is less than] c, t, [Anc.sub.p] [is greater than], where "c" defines the content itself, expressed as text, graphics, tables, bitmaps, executable code, video, audio or any other static or dynamic data objects supported by the
hypermedia system; "t" is a title that provides a unique identifier to the page; and "[Anc.sub.p]" defines a set of anchors contained in the page.
Wilhelm and Friedemann believe that using
hypermedia as a learning tool can create such an environment.
van Dam later sponsored the IRIS project at Brown, which, under the direction of Norman Meyrowitz, created Intermedia, a UNIX-based networked
hypermedia system with advanced multimedia editing features for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the liberal arts and sciences.
Based on CLT, these studies contribute empirical evidence with respect to the use of some tools in the design of
hypermedia environments that reduce CL.
User models for adaptive
hypermedia and adaptive educational systems.
Shelley Jackson is the author of a seminal CD ROM project called Patchwork Girl, one of the first interactive narratives to use Storyspace and incorporate hypertext and
hypermedia. Patchwork Girl alludes to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and plays with the metaphor of fragments of text and the body fragments of Frankenstein's monster.
Hypermedia programs can be designed to highlight relevant information, reinforce correct responses, increase response times, decrease distractions, offer privacy, improve attention span, and provide motivation (Bornas, Severa, & Liabres, 1997; Edwards, Blackhurst, & Koorland, 1995; Jonassen & Grabowski, 1993; Koscinski & Gast, 1993; Terwillinger, 1986; Yehle & Wambold, 1998).
The letter is to literacy as the e-mail is to
hypermedia.
Hypermedia as such is different from the letter in that it takes days to deliver through manual carriers, while the e-mail is sent, for all practical purposes, instantly.
Nearly all computer-based simulations are built using a
hypermedia design that provides a means for students to navigate through the study.
