If the passage between the military
demarcation line is halted, it would impact South Korean tourists who visit the North Korean border city of Kaesong, as well as the joint industrial complex in the city.
The comments were in response to reports in Tokyo that Hashimoto proposed to Yeltsin that the
demarcation line between Russia and Japan be set north of the disputed islands.
"The
demarcation line can be another name that represents a starting line for a new history," a Seoul city government official said.

The heads of the two Koreas meet at Panmunjeom Friday, the first inter-Korean leaders' summit in 11 years and the first at the border village divided by the military
demarcation line (MDL) that splits the two sides.
Kim, director of the United Front Department of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, entered South Korea crossing the military
demarcation line and arrived in Seoul later.
After their summit talks, to be held earlier in the day, Moon and Kim plan to plant a pine tree on the military
demarcation line (MDL) that separates the two Koreas, President Moon Jae-in's chief of staff Im Jong-seok, told a press briefing here.
