data storage

the storing of business documentation. This can involve the accumulation of physical ‘paper mountains’ with attendant problems of space availability, extra staff and retrieval. However, many firms now use COMPUTER-based electronic systems such as document image processing (DIP). DIP compresses a document into a series of digits which is indexed and stored on a disk file; scanners search and retrieve information held on disk, reproducing items by laser printout. See INFORMATION MANAGEMENT.
