Barge

A large boat with a flat bottom that does not propel itself. Barges must be attached to a tugboat or towboat to be transported. They are used on rivers and canals, primarily to convey cheap cargo in bulk. They were more common prior to the introduction of railroads during the Industrial Revolution.
