ZIP Code

Zoning Improvement Plan Code. A series of five numbers identifying the area of the United States in which to deliver mail. While some ZIP codes are reserved for post office boxes and single addresses receiving large volumes of mail, most identify the general area, such as the town or neighborhood, to which correspondence is addressed. They were introduced in 1963.
