U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services

The head of the Department of Health and Human Services. The secretary is responsible for protecting the public health. He/she has jurisdiction over drug inspections, implementation of Medicare and Medicaid, health service for Native Americans, and many similar operations. Until 1995, the secretary was also charged with the administration of the Social Security Administration. He/she is appointed by the president of the United States and confirmed by the Senate.
