SMR (
specialized mobile radio) services, which, for the most part, serve the needs of commercial fleets in the field, can also be used for data transmissions, though their chief purpose is the provision of dispatch services.
Telecommunications leases generally fall into five categories: small rooftop antennas, used in conjunction with technologies such as cellular telephones, PCS or personal communications services antennas (the new digital successors to cell phones) and
specialized mobile radio (private dispatching service); larger rooftop antennas, often providing satellite reception and transmission for tenants; antenna towers, which broadcast radio and television signals as well as being locations for cellular and PCS signals; communications closets; and wiring "smart" buildings to facilitate high-speed Internet access and data transmission, better cable television service and discounted telephone service.
