Social Security Number

A number given to every American citizen and national. The number is unique to each person and is necessary to work. Government organizations use Social Security numbers for a variety of purposes, notably to ensure that each citizen is billed for his/her own taxes, and not those of someone else with the same name. It is also used to determine eligibility for certain government services, especially Social Security benefits.
