second of arc is about the size of a star as it appears to the eye under the best and calmest of conditions from a mountaintop observatory.
ESO astronomers expect to be able to point the telescope with an accuracy of 1
second of arc, which they say is "a figure unsurpassed by any other existing telescope of this size." The computer system may even permit remote control of the telescope from ESO headquarters in Garching, West Germany.
The sizes of the granular elements range from two down to Y3
second of arc, or to as small as about 150 miles on the sun's surface."
