But that's not all, having been a major slave-trading nation in the past the Westminster government under Tony Blair apologised (in 2007) for the obscene mistake of promoting transatlantic slavery which was pursued by the
monarchy and British governments in the 1600 and 1700s.
And elsewhere, hereditary
monarchy continues to play its symbolic part; but usually by clear invitation of the people, as part of a broadly republican constitution.
They are found saying the former king for not dreaming about restoration of the institution of
monarchy.
'I have advised my children and grandchildren to protect the King and the
monarchy ...
The Armed Forces are not commanded by the
monarchy (no matter what title or rank members of the family hold nor the number of badges medals and decorations they may wear).
So what does this mean for the
monarchy? Not much, as it turns out.
A modern democratic republic would have little in common with either Cromwell's Protectorate, the
monarchy that he overthrew, or with the restored
monarchy, as none of these entities were elected by the entire adult population.
