Labour Force Survey

a UK survey which is undertaken to provide statistics relating to the size and composition of the LABOUR FORCE. A representative sample of some 120,000 people, men between the ages of 16 and 64 and women between the ages of 16 and 59, are interviewed over a three month period and asked to indicate details of their employment status: employee, self-employed, unpaid family worker, engaged on a government training and employment programme or unemployed. The Survey also provides other details of labour market conditions including average weekly earnings, paid holiday entitlements and average weekly number of hours worked. The Survey is organized by the Employment Service and is used to compile the International Labour Organization Unemployment Measure. See DEPARTMENT FOR WORK AND PENSIONS.
