"For data-intensive, mission-critical applications ranging from supply-chain management to e-commerce solutions, TimesTen extends HP's leadership in 64-bix UNIX and
IA-64 computing."
Intel counters that
IA-64 has "full i32-bit compatibility in the hardware" for direct execution, and says that the systems functions of 32-bit programs running on Itanium will have their systems functions automatically carried out in 64-bit mode "for full native performance." It's no secret, however, that Intel intends to keep up parallel development of its 32-bit line of processors until well after the second generation
IA-64, McKinley, makes it to market.
The K8 is AMD's answer to
IA-64 and is rumored to be the 64-bit version of the K7.
Solaris 8 is for both Sparc and Intel architectures, and is also running on
IA-64 simulators.
It is also more than just the code base that will reportedly represent about 80% of the code that is going into the IBM-SCO Monterey/64 Unix variant for Intel's forthcoming
IA-64 chips.
HP's new
IA-64 upgradeable design featured in the N- Class and L-Class incorporates one control chip for each two CPUs and can output data on to a Merced (
IA-64) bus.
Heading off concerns about the demise of Tru64 Unix, Compaq Computer Corp says the operating system won't now be ported to Intel's
IA-64. It will stay on Alpha and remain the company's high-end Unix choice of record.
Having divorced SCO on developing a version of Unix for Intel's
IA-64 processors, HP started working with NEC and Hitachi in September 1997 on creating a more stable and modular HP-UX kernel for both PA-RISC and
IA-64 processors.
Monterey is IBM's AIX ported to
IA-64 and blended with features from Santa Cruz Operation Inc UnixWare and Sequent Computer Systems Inc's Dynix/ptx.
Compaq Computer Corp sees Linux and high performance computing systems as the savior of its Alpha microprocessor design, now that Microsoft Corp is no longer developing Windows 2000 for the Intel
IA-64 rival.
