The researchers suggest that regions of the Martian surface could be made habitable with a material -- silica aerogel -- that mimics Earth's atmospheric
greenhouse effect. Through modeling and experiments, the researchers show that a two to three-centimeter-thick shield of silica aerogel could transmit enough visible light for photosynthesis, block hazardous ultraviolet radiation, and raise temperatures underneath permanently above the melting point of water, all without the need for any internal heat source.
We thus conclude that the same physics that lead to a positive
greenhouse effect and radiative forcing over most of the globe produce a negative
greenhouse effect and radiative forcing under the extreme climate conditions found over the Antarctic Plateau.
This negative
greenhouse effect, Notholt and colleagues propose, results from the region's frigid temperatures, the lowest on Earth (SN: 1/25/14, p.
Students also demonstrate misunderstanding about the
greenhouse effect and its processes.
In other words, the countries of the world are still in dire need of the energy of oil and fuels that cause the
greenhouse effect, as well as of grazing lands and agricultural land that do away with the forests that cleanse greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2).
Pollution from aeroplane heightens
greenhouse effect, true -- so what is the solution?
Petrobras (NYSE: PBR) (NYSE: PBRA) (Bovespa: PETR), a Brazil-based company that explores, produces, refines and transports oil and gas, has announced an investment to prevent
greenhouse effect gas emissions.
Transferring carbon from atmospheric carbon dioxide into the soil, not only reduces the
greenhouse effect, but increases the fertility of the soil.
This layer of gases warms a planet by trapping the sun's heat, a process called the
greenhouse effect. Study the thermometer showing the planets' surface temperatures, and then answer the questions below.
Because they behave like the panes in a greenhouse, they are called greenhouse gases, and their influence on Earth's temperature is called the
greenhouse effect. All other things being equal, the higher the concentration of such gases in the atmosphere, the warmer the planet gets.
In 1976, he was serving as a principal investigator on the Pioneer Venus Orbiter when a Harvard postdoctoral researcher asked him to help calculate the
greenhouse effect of human-generated emissions on the Earth's atmosphere.
The installations are expected to contribute to a reduction of approximately 17,410 tons of CO2 a year, equivalent to approximately 5.8% of the emission of
greenhouse effect gas produced by the company in fiscal 2005.
