Fils

A division of the currency in several Arabic speaking countries. Many currencies, such as the Emirati dirham and the Bahraini dinar, are divided into 100 or 1,000 fils.

Authorities have stated in the past that diesel prices remained unchanged from 1985 until 2008 - being sold all these years for 70 fils per litre (land transport) and 80 fils per litre (maritime sector).
Meanwhile, Al Wardi Transport, one of the biggest fleet operators of trucks and equipment in Bahrain, said the scheduled increase in diesel price would affect business especially since the price in neighbouring Saudi Arabia was 45 fils per litre.
"Saudi Arabia's current diesel price is 45 fils per litre while we in Bahrain are increasing it to 180 fils per litre, which is a big cost difference."
Both tellers said they don't use the small fils and have no stock of it in their branch.
She took her container to check but only found a minimum of 50 fils. "We don't have the smaller denominations.
When asked to break the Dh10 into small change, one teller offered 25 fils, 50 fils and Dh1 coins.
"There are no 5 fils or 10 fils coins any more," the teller said.
An approximation based on reader feedback puts the average money lost in transactions due to shortage of 1, 5 and 10 fils coins at Dh10 per month per household.
Residents say that since almost every business in the country charges customers to the actual fils despite the fact that 5 fils and 10 fils are not in wide circulation, it amounts to hidden costs to the shopper.
