The 5.5-by 5.5- by 11-inch molds were formed using standard 2-by 6-inch
dimensional lumber. The 3.5- by 8- by 12-inch molds were made using 2- by 4-inch
dimensional lumber.
In the second project, KBS removed
dimensional lumber and the truss system from an 1850s structure in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.
With it you can cut
dimensional lumber or a natural edged slab.
"Then we took the
dimensional lumber and cut curves out of it more or less like building the stern of a ship," Purcell says.
It uses small pieces, with diameters ranging from under 2 inches to no more than 4--trees culled from the forests to allow larger hickory trees to flourish for
dimensional lumber creation.

Nearly 100 percent of the composite wood products used by the industry are manufactured from sawdust generated during the milling of
dimensional lumber and/or plantation trees grown for pulp.
Some of the wood will then be sold to locals as rough
dimensional lumber and firewood; some will be sold to Tierra Alta, a nonprofit that makes woodstove pellets; and some will be purchased by West for a small cabin business he's starting.
The only
dimensional lumber used in construction is in the deck and porch roof framing, the framing of the interior walls, and the trim around the windows and floor.
