Woodcut
A block of wood with a letter or image cut into it. Woodcuts were used as an early way to print materials in large quantities. They developed in Asia.

It was as early as 700 AD that the first printable version of newspaper was published in Beijing with the help of a Chinese model printing press, which was nothing more than a mere wood-block printing system.
Wood-block printing is thought to have begun in ancient China, making its way to Europe only in the latter part of the thirteenth century.
