The average credit rating of the bonds in a bond fund or a portfolio consisting entirely of bonds. This credit rating is weighted for the percentage each bond represents in the fund or portfolio. As with individual bonds, the higher a bond fund's weighted average credit rating, the less risk and the lower return it carries.
