Voluntary Reserve

Voluntary Reserve

Money or other liquid assets a bank or insurance company puts aside over and above what regulators require. The voluntary reserve may exist to pay unforeseen liabilities or to make the bank or insurance company more fiscally sound. However, a company may keep a voluntary reserve to pay for expected, future liabilities such as dividends. The voluntary reserve is listed as a liability on the company's balance sheet.
