United Nations

An international organization consisting of a large majority of the nations in the world. Its mission is to promote peace, international development, human rights and global health. It formerly helped prepare colonies for independence. It was established in 1945 following the end of World War II.

United Nations (UN)

The UN Charter was drawn up by 50 nations and officially created on 24 October 1945. The principal departments of the UN are the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, a Trustee-ship Council and a Secretariat. There are also a number of subsidiaries and affiliated bodies working in accordance with the Charter, such as the INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND (IMF), the FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION (FAO), the WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION (WTO), the WORLD BANK, the UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT (UNCTAD) and the INTERNATIONAL LABOUR OFFICE (ILO).
