Economic and Social Council Also called ECOSOC. An organization under the United Nations charged with encouraging social and economic development worldwide. ECOSOC conducts a four-week meeting in New York each July. Its work is supplemented by the five United Nations Regional Economic Commissions. ECOSOC was established in 1945.
