A tank maintained below ground level and holding liquids, usually petrochemicals or waste.The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registers and regulates underground storage tanks unless there is an approved state or tribal program in place.The EPA maintains an excellent Web site (www.epa.gov/oust) with information about regulations, cleanup, assistance for development of abandoned gas stations,and links to all individual state programs and resources.
