An organization created by the United Nations and charged with providing assistance to developing countries and others in developing guidelines for sustainable environmental policies. It also publishes reports on the state of the environment and has had a significant role in the discussion of climate change. See also: Kyoto Protocol.

The use of biofuels as a source of clean energy may lead to higher carbon emissions, but can also yield significant cuts if production is properly managed, the UN Environment Programme said Friday.
